I never dreamed community service hours could be so rewarding. We go out on Sunday mornings with a big truck and a parade of motorcycles. We go to veterans’ houses and put big flag poles in their yards. The veteran hoists the flag. It’s a moving experience. We say the Pledge of Allegiance, and we pray. Then we fold the flag for the veteran to take inside while the concrete dries. I’ve always been a patriot. To actually be a part of honoring them, I’m walking on air. This is the first time I’ve had a real relationship with God. Before, I felt like God was at my disposal. I would pray for stuff, but I didn’t ask for forgiveness. My wife has always been one who helps others; she takes care of stray or abused dogs. This morning, I saw some people sleeping outside 7-11. I started to judge them, but then I bought them donuts instead. I feel like God has me by the seat of my pants, saying, “It’s time to get to work.” The world isn’t as ugly as people make it out to be. There’s a lot of beauty if you look for it.
